Western battles to 0-0 overtime tie with Regis

Oct. 1, 2006

Box Score

BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Western Washington University controlled the pace of play for most of the game, but could not score, and settled for a 0-0 overtime tie with Regis University in a non-league men's soccer contest Sunday at Orca Field on the Whatcom CC campus.

The Vikings are now 2-11-1 and Regis is 2-8-2.

"It was really a tough defensive battle today," said Western coach Travis Connell. "Both teams were really organized and defended the goal well."

Western freshman goalkeeper Christian Warman (Sedro-Woolley) made a pair of saves and played all 110 minutes to post the first shutout of his collegiate career. It also was the Vikings' first shutout this season. Trevor Steege had five saves for the Rangers.

Gus Zadra (Sr., Poulsbo/North Kitsap) and Jacob Haddock (Sr., Burlington/Burlington-Edison) each had five shots to lead Western, which had a 22-8 advantage in that category, including 7-2 in overtime.

"We had some chances," Connell said. "We bent their defense, but were never able to break through and get that goal."

The Vikings came close in the 24th minute when Haddock earned a penalty kick after being knocked over in the box while scrambling for a loose ball. Haddock drove the ball low to the left corner, but Steege guessed right and blocked the shot. The rebound bounced back to Haddock, but his second effort was again snuffed out by the Ranger goalkeeper.

The best chance in overtime for either team came with just seven seconds remaining in the second extra session. Sean Connor's (Fr., Mount Vernon) corner kick found Zadra alone on the far post, but his header from six yards sailed just wide of the right post.

"We played good soccer today," said Connell. "We're playing as good as we have all season and if we get healthy and continue to play hard, we'll put ourselves in a good position to be successful down the stretch."

Western travels to Simon Fraser on Monday (4 p.m.-note time change) for a non-league contest. Five of the Vikings' remaining six games are on the road.
