BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Midfielder Brendan Quilici (Fr., Battle Ground/Columbia River) scored two minutes into the second half, propelling Western Washington University to a 2-0 victory over University of Colorado at Colorado Springs in a non-conference men's soccer contest Thursday at Orca Field on the Whatcom CC campus.
It was the fifth straight victory for Western, which improved to 8-4-0. It is the Vikings' longest streak since winning seven consecutive games in 2004.
UCCS, which lost for the seventh time in its last eight games, fell to 2-9-0.
Quilici scored his fourth goal of the season in the 47th minute, collecting a long ball that was misplayed by the UCCS defense and finding the net from 10 yards.
Forward Gibson Bardsley (Fr., Fall City/Mount Si) got an insurance goal for the Vikings in the 77th minute. It was his team-leading seventh goal of the season, tying the school record for goals by a freshman set by Jeff Busch in 1985.
Bardsley took a long pass from Oliver Wellman (Jr., Bellevue/Sammamish) and fired a rocket from 15 yards into the upper left corner. Western goalkeeper Michael Lockwood (Sr., Canby, OR) recorded his fourth shutout of the campaign, making three saves.
The Vikings host University of Mary ND on Saturday (7 p.m.) in a non-league game.
