LAS VEGAS, Nevada - Guard Amanda Dunbar (So., Marysville/Marysville-Pilchuck) tied her career-high with 23 points, making 5-of-10 3-pointers, as Western Washington University defeated Quincy University IL, 82-64, during first-day action Thursday in the women's division of the third annual Great Western Shootout basketball tournament being held at the Doolittle Community Center.
The Vikings, who improved to 7-2, also got 11 points and a game-high 11 rebounds off the bench from Gabby Wade (Jr., Lacey/River Ridge), and center Claire Pallansch (Sr., Redmond) added 11 points and nine rebounds.
Quincy, which drove nine hours to play the contest, leaving Reno at 6 a.m., lost for just the second time in 10 games. The Lady Hawks, who entered the contest averaging 91.7 points per game, were paced by guard Jessica Keller with 19 points.
Western led 24-7 after the first eight minutes, hitting 8 of its first 14 shots. Quincy was 3-of-18 during that stretch.
The Lady Hawks got back to within nine before a 16-4 run put Western ahead by 22, 43-21, with 3:36 left in the period. The Vikings were ahead by that same margin, 50-28, at halftime.
Dunbar scored 18 points in the first period, hitting 6-of-9 from the floor, 4-of-6 from 3-point range.
Western, which had a 54-31 rebound advantage, led by double figures throughout the second half. Quincy narrowed the margin to 11, 63-52, with 10:24 remaining, but a 12-2 run by the Vikings put the game out of reach.
Western forward Jessica Summers (Sr., Blaine) suffered a dislocated thumb midway through the first half and did not return to the game.
The Vikings play Dixie State, which lost 58-48 to Central Washington earlier Thursday, in final-day tourney action Friday at 1 p.m. Quincy faces Central at 11 a.m.
