BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Western Washington University placed seven student-athletes, five women and two men, on the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Soccer Academic all-star team announced today.
Leading that contingent were two three-time honorees, Jenny Barton (Sr., Boise, ID/Borah), a design major with a 3.55 (4.0 scale) grade point average, and Kasey Hostetler (Sr., Richland/Hanford), a biochemistry major with a 3.50 GPA.
In all, the Vikings had five repeaters among its selections. Named for the second straight year were Kylie Broadbent (Sr., Spokane/Lewis & Clark), who is completing a second degree in cellular and molecular biology and has a 3.66 GPA; Bryn Gibson (Sr., Bellevue/Hanford), a business administration and marketing major with a 3.51 GPA; and Meghan Woodman (Sr., Redmond), a kinesiology major with a 3.40 GPA.
Rounding out the Western academic all-stars were Matt Fishbaugher (Jr., Redmond), a cellular and molecular biology major with a 3.22 GPA, and Darragh Simm (Jr., Woodinville), a business administration and marketing major with a 3.48 GPA.

Sixty-Nine Named To GNAC Soccer Academic Team
SPOKANE - A total of 69 student-athletes - 52 women and 17 men - have been named to the 2009 Great Northwest Athletic Conference Soccer Academic all-star team. Heading up the women's academic team are sophomores Susana Contreras of Northwest Nazarene and Kelsey Jenkins of Seattle Pacific. Both players have 3.97 cumulative GPAs.
Seattle Pacific placed the most players on the academic team with nine. Central Washington, Montana State Billings, Northwest Nazarene and Western Oregon have eight each.
Andy Wolverton of Seattle Pacific has the top GPA (3.97) on the men's academic team. MSUB placed the most players on the men's academic team with seven.
Ten student-athletes were named to the soccer academic team for the third time, including Amber Easterbrook of Central Washington; Chelsea Libby, Tom Milroy, Sam Charles and Jarred Weisen, all of Montana State Billings; Kelcy Ware of Saint Martin's; Jesslyn Rahm Kellerman and Alec Nelson of Seattle Pacific; and Jenny Barton and Kasey Hostetler from Western Washington.
An additional 25 student-athletes, 23 women and two men earned academic all-star honors for the second time.
To be eligible for the GNAC academic team, student-athletes must have a minimum grade point average of 3.20 and be in at least their second year of competition at their university.
