BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Forward Willow Cabe (Sr., McCleary/Elma) had 19 of her game and career-high 25 points in the first half as Western Washington University rolled past University of Alaska Fairbanks, 92-46, in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's basketball opener for both schools Thursday on Haggen Court at Sam Carver Gymnasium.
Cabe, who hit 10-of-15 field goals including 3-of-5 from 3-point range, also had a game-high 10 rebounds for the Vikings, who improved to 10-2 overall. Forward Jessica Summers (Sr., Blaine) had 12 points for Western and guard Amanda Dunbar (Sr., Marysville/Marysville-Pilchuck) added 10.
Alaska Fairbanks fell to 1-11 with its 11th straight loss since a season-opening victory. Alexandra Melonson led the Nanooks with 12 points and Caitlin Hamsley had 11.
The Vikings never trailed, jumping to a 10-0 and extending the margin to 33-9 with 7:37 in the first half by using a 14-2 run. Cabe had 12 of those points, including the first 10 of the charge.
Western, which shot 54.1 percent (20-of-37) from the field in the first half, held a 53-22 lead at halftime, and never led by less than 29 in the second half.
The Vikings held the Nanooks to 24.6 percent (15-of-61) field-goal shooting, and had a 55-31 advantage in rebounds.
Western next entertains No.5-ranked and defending GNAC champion Alaska Anchorage (11-1) in a GNAC counter Saturday (7 p.m.).
