Interview with Sydney Donaldson
BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Forward Sydney Donaldson (Sr., Edmonds/Edmonds-Woodway) scored a career-high 24 points and grabbed a season-high 10 rebounds, lifting Western Washington University to an 80-64 victory over Western Oregon University on Thursday, Jan. 15, in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's basketball contest at Sam Carver Gymnasium on the WWU campus.
Taylor Peacocke (So., Kenmore/Inglemoor) added 18 points for the Vikings, who improved to 10-5 overall and 4-2 in the GNAC with their fourth consecutive triumph.
Angie Titus had 14 points, 12 of them in the second half, for WOU, which fell to 4-10 overall and 1-5 in conference play with its fourth consecutive loss.
The Vikings shot 60.0 percent (30-of-50) from the field, the third time in the last four games theyhave shot 60 percent or better. They hit 10 straight shots midway through the first half, and eventually used a 9-0 run to open up a 33-22 lead with just under three minutes left in the first half.
Donaldson was 9-of-12 from the floor, and Peacocke 8-of-11.
WWU held a 36-25 lead at halftime, then started the second half with eight consecutive points to take a 44-25 advantage with 16:35 remaining. The margin reached 32 points at 70-38 with 8:52 to play.
Sami Osborne had 13 points for WOU, and Jasmine Miller added 12. Dana Goularte, the Wolves' leading scorer (16.2 ppg) and rebounder (10.7 rpg), missed her third straight game with an ankle injury.
WWU had a 32-18 advantage in rebounds.
The win was the 24th straight for WWU in the series, which the Vikings lead 45-9.
The Vikings entered the game No.2 in NCAA Division II in field goal percentage at 49.1 percent.
WWU hosts Saint Martin's in a GNAC counter on Saturday, Jan. 17 (7 p.m.).
