BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Savanna Moorehouse (Sr., Bonney Lake, WA) had a goal and an assist in the first nine minutes, helping nationally ranked Western Washington University achieve its longest winning streak in the last three decades with a 4-0 triumph over Simon Fraser University on Thursday in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's soccer game at Harrington Field.
The Vikings, ranked No. 2 for the second consecutive week in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America NCAA Division II Top 25 Poll, improved to 15-1-0 overall and remained perfect in the GNAC at 10-0-0. The Vikings have won 13 straight, their longest victory string since a 38-match win streak from 1982-84. SFU is 6-4-2 overall, 4-4-1 in the GNAC.
Western took control quickly. In the fourth minute, Moorehouse fed a through ball to Gabriela Pelogi (Fr., Federal Way, WA/Bonney Lake), who blasted a shot into the upper left corner from 10 yards. Moorehouse scored herself in the ninth minute, heading in a cross from the left by Erin Russell (Jr., Brier, WA/Mountlake Terrace).
"It was a good performance," said WWU coach Travis Connell. "It makes things easier when you score early, and we got off to another good start tonight."
The Vikings added a pair of second-half goals in set pieces, Anna DeWeirdt (Jr., Sammamish, WA/Skyline) scoring from the goal mouth on a post-free kick scramble (54:38), and Delanee Nilles (Sr., Poulsbo, WA/North Kitsap) heading home a corner from Stephanie Hamilton (Sr., Orting, WA/Bellarmine Prep) (84:48).
Western had a 12-6 edge in shots in posting their 10th shutout of the season.
"Hamilton had a great game in the midfield, and we got a great game from the defensive triangle of Emily Webster (So., Bellingham, WA/Sehome), Delanee Nilles and Sierra Shugarts (So., Federal Way, WA/Decatur). Their control of the game meant we could do a lot of things."
The Vikings can clinch the GNAC regular-season championship when they play host to Northwest Nazarene next Thursday (7 p.m.).
