ARCATA, Calif. -- Junior guard Taylor Peacocke scored a team-high 20 points and senior center Kayla Bernsen recorded a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds, but it wasn't enough as Western Washington dropped a 69-65 contest to host Humboldt State Saturday afternoon at the West Region Challenge.
The Vikings (1-1) evened their season record at 1-1 after opening the season Friday with a dominating 97-51 win over Fresno Pacific. Humboldt State evened its season record at 1-1 with the victory.
Peacocke (Kenmore, WA/Inglemoor/Sacramento State) was 10-for-18 from the field and added 4 steals while playing all 40 minutes.
Bernsen (Moses Lake, WA) was 5-for-12 from the floor and a perfect 5-for-5 from the free throw line while playing 27 minutes. The first-team preseason All-GNAC selection missed most of the preseason with a broken bone in her finger.
Junior forward Kiana Gandy (Des Moines, WA/Mount Rainier) contributed 18 points, one off her career high, and had 6 rebounds.
WWU out-scored the Lumberjacks 36-33 in the second half, but couldn't overcome the 36-29 deficit in the first two quarters.
Humboldt State was led by a game-high 22 points from sophomore guard Kiana Brown, a transfer from Eastern Washington University. Brown hit 5 of 7 three pointers as the Lumberjacks were 8-for-15 (53.3%) for the game from beyond the arc.
The Vikings return to action next weekend with games against Azusa Pacific (Friday, 5:30 pm) and UC San Diego (Saturday, 5:30 pm) at the West Region Crossover Classic in Azusa, Calif.
