LAS VEGAS - The Western Washington University Women's Basketball team extended its winning streak to five consecutive games with a 65-45 victory over Midwestern State Friday evening in the South Point Holiday Hoops Classic at South Point Arena.
The Vikings (6-3) had a balanced attack with four players reaching double-digits in scoring. Junior forward Tia Briggs (Tacoma, WA/Wilson) scored a team-high 13 points. Junior guard Taylor Peacocke (Kenmore, WA/Inglemoor/Sacramento State) and senior center Kayla Bernsen (Moses Lake, WA) each scored 11 points, and junior forward Aleisha Hathaway (Spokane, WA/Shadle Park) added 10 points.
After opening the season 1-3, the Vikings have won their last five games to improve to 6-3 overall (2-0 in GNAC play). Midwestern State falls to 1-8 on the season.
Western trailed 13-12 after the first quarter, but outscored the Mustangs 19-11 in the second quarter to take a 31-24 halftime lead. Peacocke (8 points), Hathaway (7 points) and Alyssa Evans (5 points) led the Vikings in scoring.
Briggs scored 9 of her 13 points in the second half, as the Vikings pulled away from Mustangs with a 34-21 advantage in the second half.
Midwestern State was led by 12 points from Kristin Rydell.
The Vikings (6-3) continue tournament play tomorrow vs. No. 23 Quincy (5:45 pm). After taking time off for the Holiday break, Western returns to GNAC action Dec. 31 at Concordia (3 pm) and Jan. 2 at Western Oregon (7 pm).
