Dec. 19, 2015

Box Score

LAS VEGAS - The Western Washington University Women's Basketball team had its five-game winning streak snapped in a 72-62 loss against No. 23 Quincy Saturday evening in the South Point Holiday Hoops Classic at South Point Arena.

An 11-0 run by Quincy to end the first half proved to be too much of a difference to make up, as the Vikings dropped to 6-4 overall suffering their first loss since Nov. 21. Quincy improved to 10-1 overall.

The Vikings were led by a career-high 24 points by junior guard Aleisha Hathaway (Spokane, WA/Shadle Park) on 8-for-12 shooting, including 3-for-5 from three-point range. Junior guard Taylor Peacocke (Kenmore, WA/Inglemoor/Sacramento State) added 13 points and senior center Kayla Bernsen (Moses Lake, WA) recorded a game-high 10 rebounds.

Quincy was 11-for-17 (64.7%) from three-point range, with Maggie Cunningham, Nikia Edom and Anika Webster each hitting three 3-pointers. Webster led the Hawks with 17 points off the bench, while Cunningham (14 points), Edom (11 points) and Kara Gerbus (12 points) also scored in double-digits.

Western held a 24-21 lead with 3:47 remaining in the first half, but the Hawks closed out the second quarter with an 11-0 run to take a 32-24 lead. Peacock and Bernsen each had 6 points for the Vikings, while Webster led Quincy with 11 points. The Hawks hit on 6 of their 8 3-point attempts in the first half (75.0%) and out-shot the Vikings 47.8% (11-for-23) to 39.3% (11-for-28).

The Vikings pulled to within 4 points at 45-41 heading into the final quarter and made a late run to pull to within 3 points at 60-57 with 4:31 remaining in the game, but could not hold off the Hawks down the stretch. Quincy completed the game on a 12-5 run. Hathaway scored 22 of her career-high 24 points in the second half.

The Vikings (6-4) will take time off for the Holiday break and return to GNAC action Dec. 31 at Concordia (3 pm) and Jan. 2 at Western Oregon (7 pm).
