BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Western Washington junior point guard Taylor Peacocke scored a season-high 24 points and the Vikings led wire-to-wire in a 69-58 victory over Simon Fraser University Tuesday evening in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's basketball game.
The Vikings improved to 12-5 overall and gained sole possession of first place in the GNAC with an 8-1 league mark. WWU has won 11 of its last 13 games after opening the season 1-3. Simon Fraser had its three-game winning streak snapped to fall to 7-7 overall and 5-4 in GNAC play.
Peacocke (Kenmore, WA/Inglemoor/Sacramento State) was 9-for-11 from the field and hit a career-high four 3-pointers (4-for-5) to lead three Vikings in double-digits scoring. Peacocke left the game late in the fourth quarter after being hit in the head by the ball on a deflected pass.
Senior center Kayla Bernsen (Moses Lake, WA) notched her fourth double-double of the season with 11 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. She also recorded a career-high-tying 5 blocked shots (5th time). Junior forward Tia Briggs (Tacoma, WA/Wilson) added 15 points on 6-for-8 shooting from the field.
"I thought tonight we did a really nice job defensively and contended their three-pointers, which is their strength," said head coach Carmen Dolfo. "It was a great team win where I thought we played together on offense and committed to winning the game with our defense."
WWU led 29-25 at halftime, but came out with a dominating third quarter out-scoring the Clan 28-19 to take a 13-point lead at 57-44. Peacocke scored 12 points in the third quarter, going a perfect 4-for-4 from the field including three 3-pointers. Briggs added 9 points in the quarter for the Vikings.
The Clan were led by 21 points from Rachel Fradgley on 9-for-18 shooting and 11 points from Alisha Roberts.
WWU shot 51.9% from the field (27-for-52), including 5-for-10 from 3-point range. SFU was held to 35.9% from the field (23-for-64).
The Vikings (12-5, 8-1 GNAC) return to action Thursday with a road game at Montana State Billings (5:15 pm MT/4:15 pm PT). WWU's next home games are Jan. 28 vs. Western Oregon (5:15 pm) and Jan. 30 vs. Concordia (7 pm).
