BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Western Washington junior guard Taylor Peacocke scored 21 points and surpassed 1,000 career points to lead the Vikings to a 70-39 victory over Western Oregon Thursday night in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's basketball game at Whatcom Pavilion.
Peacocke (Kenmore, WA/Inglemoor/Sacramento State) became the 24th player in program history to surpass the 1,000-point mark, reaching the milestone on a 16-footer from the left side at the 7:32 mark in the second quarter. In addition to recording her third 20-point effort of the season, she tallied 5 seals and 3 assists.
Senior center Kayla Bernsen (Moses Lake, WA) recorded her fifth double-double of the season with 14 points and 10 rebounds. She also tallied a career-high 6 blocks to increase her career total to 162, one short of the No. 3 spot in the WWU record books.
With their 12th win in the last 15 games the Vikings improve to 13-6 overall and 9-2 in GNAC play. Western Oregon falls to 3-16 overall and 2-9 in GNAC play while dropping its 16th consecutive game to the Vikings.
"We knew defense would be huge, we wanted to be sure not to give them easy looks...and I feel like we did that," said head coach Carmen Dolfo. "We gave up too many rebounds in the first half, but we were able to fix that in the second half."
The Vikings shot 58.7% for the game, the second-best mark this season and the best in a league game, on 27-for-46 shooting (5-for-9 3-pointers). The defense held WOU to a 24.9% mark from the field, a season-low mark by a Vikings opponent this season.
In addition to big performances by Peacocke and Bernsen, junior forward Kiana Gandy (Des Moines, WA/Mount Rainier) added 15 points on 6-for-10 shooting.
"Taylor hits some big shots and we moved the ball well," added Dolfo. "Without Tia (Briggs), we needed everybody to step up, and they did that tonight. It was a good team win."
Junior forward Tia Briggs (Tacoma, WA/Wilson), who is averaging 11.0 points per game (14.3 ppg over last 7 games), did not suit up due to illness.
The Vikings raced out to a 25-12 lead after one quarter with Peacocke leading the way with 10 points. WWU shot 81.8% from the field in the quarter (9-for-11), including 2-for-2 from 3-point range and 5-for-5 from the free throw line. Gandy added 6 points and junior forward Rachel Albert (Bellingham, WA/Sehome) and Bernsen each totaled 4 rebounds.
Western took a 15-point lead into halftime by a 36-21 margin, out-scoring the Wolves 11-9 in the second quarter. Peacocke again led the Vikings in scoring with 4 points to total 14 first-half points.
WWU kept the pressure on with a 21-9 barrage in the third quarter, led by 6 points from Bernsen and 5 apiece from Gandy and Peacocke. They didn't let up with a 13-9 advantage in the final quarter led by 6 points from Bernsen.
Western Oregon was led by 7 points freshman guard Kaylie Boschma.
The Vikings (13-6, 9-2 GNAC) return to the court Saturday hosting Concordia at 7 pm at Whatcom Pavilion.
