FAIRBANKS, Alaska - The No. 19 Western Washington University volleyball team used a balanced offensive attack and a .364 team hitting percentage to sweep the University of Alaska 25-22, 25-22, 25-18 Thursday evening in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference Match at Alaska Airlines Court.
The Vikings extended their winning streak to 8 consecutive matches to improve to 13-6 overall and remain in second place in the GNAC with a 9-2 league mark. Alaska falls to 2-16 overall and 1-10 in league play.
Redshirt freshman outside hitter Kazlyn Roullier (Spokane Valley, WA/Central Valley) lead the Vikings with 11 kills on a .478 hitting percentage. Sophomore middle blocker Michaela Hall (Centralia, WA) added 10 kills on a .615 hitting percentage.
"Michaela (Hall) and Kazlyn (Roullier) both had really solid matches," said head coach Diane Flick-Williams. "Our setters, Brette (Boesel) and Kristina (Tribley) did an outstanding job of running a balanced offense and putting our hitters in the best opportunities."
Sophomore outside hitter Abby Phelps (Manson, WA/Chelan) narrowly missed the double-double with 9 kills and a match-high 16 digs.
Brette Boesel (Brewster, WA) tallied 19 assists and a pair of service aces, while junior Kristina Tribley (Wenatchee, WA) had 20 assists.
The Nanooks were led by 16 kills from Angela Molesworth and 15 digs by Meagan Olsen.
The Vikings remain in Alaska for a showdown with 7th-ranked Alaska Anchorage on Saturday. The Seawolves beat Simon Fraser in five sets (25-15, 25-9, 20-25, 23-25, 15-8) tonight for their 20th consecutive win, improving to 21-1 overall and 11-0 in GNAC play.
"We need to elevate our level of play on Saturday, but we are excited about the opportunity and got off to a good start on the trip," added Flick-Williams.
