SEATTLE, Wash. - Western Washington guard Taylor Peacocke continued the hot start to her senior season scoring a game-high 22 points to lead the 20th-ranked Vikings to a 68-39 victory over Fresno Pacific Saturday afternoon in the Sodexo Tip-Off Classic at Brougham Pavilion.
The Vikings, ranked No. 20 in the preseason D2SIDA media poll, are 2-0 to open the 2016-17 season, holding opponents to just 44.0 points per game. Fresno Pacific falls to 0-2 on the season.
Peacocke (Kenmore, WA/Inglemoor) was 6-for-9 from the field, draining 4-of-6 three-pointer attempts. She was also 6-for-7 from the free throw line finish with her second 20-point performance in as many games to start the season. The senior is averaging 25.0 points (50 points) through the first two games, while shooting 64.0% from the field (16-for-25) and 66.7% (10-for-15) from three-point range.
Senior forward Kiana Gandy (Des Moines, WA/Mount Rainier) and sophomore center Nikki Corbett (Camas, WA) each scored 11 points, and junior transfer Hannah Stipanovich (St. Louis, MO/Metro State) added 10 points in the victory. Senior forward Tia Briggs (Tacoma, WA/Wilson) brought down a game-high 10 rebounds.
"We didn't shoot the ball as well as we did vs. Humboldt State, but I was happy to see that our defense really controlled the game for us," said head coach Carmen Dolfo.
WWU held a 19-11 lead after the first quarter, but really turned the defense up a notch holding Fresno Pacific to only 2 points in the second quarter (16-2 margin) to take a 38-13 lead into halftime. Peacocke scored 12 of her 22 points in the first half.
The Sunbirds were led by 11 points from Ashley Cross (5-for-9 FG).
The Vikings return home next week hosting the West Region Crossover Classic with Seattle Pacific, UC San Diego and Azusa Pacific traveling to Bellingham. WWU will face Azusa Pacific (Friday, 7:30 pm) and UC San Diego (Saturday, 7:30 pm) with both games at Whatcom Community College.
