ANCHORAGE, Alaska - The Western Washington University Vikings were defeated by No. 1 Alaska Anchorage 79-52 Thursday night in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's basketball game at the Alaska Airlines Center.
The Vikings dropped their second consecutive game to fall to 19-8 overall and 15-4 in GNAC play. UAA improves to 31-1 overall and 18-1 in conference play. The Seawolves lone loss of the season came against WWU on Dec. 5 in Bellingham.
Western held close to Anchorage through most of the first half, trailing by only one point at 24-23 at the 8:05 mark in the second quarter and by three at 28-25. UAA closed out the second quarter on a 9-0 run to take a 37-25 lead into halftime and never looked back.
From there, the Seawolves showed why they are ranked top the national polls, out-scoring the Vikings 27-9 in the third quarter en route to the 27-point victory.
Junior point guard Taylor Peacocke (Kenmore, WA/Inglemoor/Sacramento State) led WWU with 17 points on 6-for-13 shooting, including 3-for-5 from 3-point range. Peacocke moved into 15th place in the WWU career record books with 1,157 points.
Junior forward Kiana Gandy (Des Moines, WA/Mt. Rainier) added 13 points and senior center Kayla Bernsen (Moses Lake, WA) scored 5 points to climb to within two points of 1,000 for her career, and also added 6 blocked shots.
The Seawolves were led by 22 points from Megan Mullings and 17 points from Alysha Devine.
The Vikings (19-8, 15-4 GNAC) close out the regular season Saturday at Alaska (7pm AKT/8 pm PT). The GNAC Tournament will be played March 3-5 in Lacey (hosted by Saint Martin's). WWU is currently tied for 2nd in the GNAC with Montana State Billings, with the Yellowjackets holding the tiebreaker going 2-0 in the head-to-head series this season. MSUB concludes the regular season Saturday at Central Washington. The top 2 seeds in the tournament will receive a first-round bye.
