BELLINGHAM, Wash. - The 7th-ranked Western Washington University women's soccer team gave another dominating performance in a 4-1 victory over Saint Martin's Thursday evening in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference match-up at Harrington Field.
The Vikings remained undefeated on the season at 8-0-1 and are a perfect 3-0-0 in GNAC play. Western also remains undefeated in its last 33 GNAC regular-season contests (29-0-4) and ran its Harrington Field winning streak to 19 consecutive games. Saint Martin's falls to 1-7-1 overall and 0-3-0 in league play.
"It was great to see us score goals," said head coach Travis Connell. "We've spent a lot of time in training working on converting our opportunities and we tonight we were able to score some early goals."
The Vikings jumped out to an early 3-0 lead before the half and never looked back. Sophomore defender Taylor Hallquist (Vancouver, WA/Columbia River) put the Vikings on the board in the sixth minute with a strike from 18 yards out on the right wing that beat the goalkeeper to the far post.
Redshirt freshman Annaliese Laurila (Portland, OR/Grant) led a late first-half surge with a goal in the 30th minute off a corner from Elise Aylward (Renton, WA/Lindberg). Less than four minutes later senior Caitlyn Jobanek (Springfield, OR/Thurston) chipped it past the keeper from 17-yards out with assists from sophomore forward Mariah Roggow (Kelso, WA/Oregon State) and freshman midfielder Lindsey Fujiwara (Sammamish, WA/Skyline).
The Vikings controlled the first half out-shooting the Saints 16-2, with SMU not recording a shot on goal.
Jobanek added to the Vikings lead with a blast from the left side 16-yards out early in the second half (48') to extend the lead to 4-0.
"Caitlyn is a very versatile player that is invaluable to our program," added Connell. "She has done a lot for our program and as a senior does a great job of leading us on the field."
The Saints got on the scoreboard in the 66th minute on a converted shot from 21-yards out by Lauren Allison over backup goalkeeper Hillary O'Connor (Los Angeles, CA/The Archer School).
The Vikings are in sole possession of first place in the GNAC with a perfect 3-0-0 record heading into Saturday's showdown with Concordia (2-0-1) at 1 pm at Harrington Field.
"We always seem to get up for the big games, and Saturday will be a big game between two really good teams," said Connell. "I am looking forward to the match on Saturday, and I think our players are as well."
