Women's Hoops Beats Seattle Pacific 71-53

BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Western Washington University senior center Tia Briggs scored a career-high 25 points to lead the No. 20 Vikings to a 71-53 victory over No. 11 Seattle Pacific Saturday night in Great Northwest Athletic Conference action at Whatcom Pavilion.

The Vikings extended their winning streak to seven consecutive games to improve to 13-3 overall and 7-1 in GNAC play. Seattle Pacific falls to 13-3 overall and 5-3 in league play.

"I was really happy with our defense tonight," said head coach Carmen Dolfo. "Tia (Briggs) did a great job on their leading scorer (Courtney Hollander), and we had people shifting and helping really well. I am proud of the job the team did tonight."

Briggs (Tacoma, WA/Wilson) added 10 rebounds to record her fourth double-double of the season. Overall the senior was 7-for-13 from the field and 11-for-13 from the free throw line.

"Tia played an all-around great game tonight, on offense and defense," said Dolfo. "She came into the game really focused. It was great to see her do well on both ends of the court."

Senior forward Kiana Gandy (Des Moines, WA/Mount Rainier) added 13 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists.

Senior guard Taylor Peacocke (Kenmore, WA/Inglemoor) entered the game as the NCAA Division II leading scorer, but was limited to 11 points on 5-for-18 shooting.

The Vikings shot 42.1% (24-for-57) from the field, compared to SPU's 31.3% (20-for-64).

Seattle Pacific was led by 10 points from Brianne Lasconia.

WWU trailed 14-12 after the first quarter and fell behind by as many as 6 points ag 23-17 with 3:46 remaining in the half. From that point on the Vikings went on a 13-0 run, led by 5 points from Gandy, to take a 30-23 lead into halftime. Briggs (8 points, 4 rebounds) and Gandy (7 points, 5 rebounds) led the Vikings. Lasconia led the Falcons with 6 points on 3-for-8 shooting.

The Vikings carried the momentum through halftime, scoring the first 9 points of the third quarter to extend the run to 22-0. After WWU built a 16-point lead at 39-23, SPU finished the quarter on an 11-6 run to pull to within 11 point at 45-34 heading into the final quarter.

The Falcons got as close at 8 points at 51-43 midway through the fourth quarter, but the Vikings scored 20 points over the final 5:43 of the game to seal the win.

WWU has a quick turnaround facing Simon Fraser (16-2, 7-1) Tuesday night in Burnaby, B.C.
