BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Western Washington University celebrated the 2016 Division II Women's Soccer National Championship won by the Vikings with an afternoon of festivities on Monday, Jan. 23.
The celebration, which was open to the public and included WWU students, faculty and staff along with family, friends and community supporters, began with a student march to the celebration from the Wade King Recreation Center to the Viking Union Multipurpose Room.
The event at the Viking Union Multipurpose Room featured several speakers, including President Sabah Randhawa, WWU Director of Athletics Steve Card, Whatcom County Executive Jack Louws and WWU soccer super fan Ron Higginbotham.
The Vikings captured the NCAA Division II National Championship beating three-time defending champion Grand Valley State 3-2 on December 3, 2016 in Kansas City for the 10th team national championship in WWU history. WWU ended the historical season with a 24-0-1 record, marking the most wins ever by a women's collegiate team in state of Washington.
