Vikings Run Away With Road Victory at Simon Fraser

WWU goes on the road and races past Simon Fraser 78-41 with dominating victory

BURNABY, B.C. – The Western Washington University women's basketball team used the same trademark defensive recipe to continue its winning ways with a 78-41 victory over Simon Fraser University Saturday evening in a road game in West Gym.

 

The Vikings put forth another dominating defensive effort in the 37-point victory to improve to 21-6 overall and 13-3 in GNAC play maintaining sole possession of second place in the conference standings. Over the last 10 games the Vikings are 9-1.

 

WWU controlled the game from the start building a 20-12 lead following the first quarter and extending the lead to 44-20 at the half following a 19-5 run to finish the first 20 minutes of the game.

 

The Vikings feature five players scoring in double figures, led by 15 points from senior forward Aspen Garrison on 6-for-12 shooting, also adding five rebounds and five assists. WWU won the inside game holding a 49-26 advantage in rebounding and out-scored SFU 48-14 with points in the paint.

 

Sophomore post Vivienne Berrett added 14 points on 6-for-7 shooting and senior forward Olivia Hodges continued her march towards All-America honors with her 19th double-double of the season tallying 12 points and a game-high 15 rebounds (and 2 blocked shots). Junior guards Libby Stump (13 points, 4 assists) and Demi Dykstra (10 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists) rounded out the double-digits scorers for the Vikings.

 

The Vikings shot 51.7-percent for the game (31-for-60), marking the fourth-best shooting performance in a GNAC contest this season.

 

Simon Fraser (9-18 , 4-12 GNAC) was led by 12 points by Rachel Loukes and eight points from Haley de Walle.

SERIES HISTORY VS. SIMON FRASER

The Vikings swept the season series vs. Simon Fraser, winning at home 66-40 on January 24 in Bellingham and 78-41 Saturday on Burnaby Mountain. WWU has won four consecutive games vs. the Red Leafs and lead the all-time series over SFU 60-38. Since the Red Leafs joined the NCAA in 2010-11, Western is 27-8 against its border rivals. In the recent series WWU has won seven of the last eight meetings.

 

POSTSEASON CLINCHED

WWU has officially clinched one of the six spots for the 2026 GNAC Women's Basketball Championships that will be held March 5-7 in Bellingham. The Vikings, first-place Central Washington, Saint Martin's and Northwest Nazarene have locked up four of the six spots with two weeks remaining in the regular season schedule.
