BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Western Washington University broke a scoring drought with a pair of second-half goals and defeated Western Oregon University, 2-0, in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's soccer game Tuesday at Civic Stadium.
Midfielders Lizzy Page (Fr., Redmond/Eastlake) and Jessica Sabado (Issaquah) scored the goals for the Vikings, who improved to 1-2-1 overall and 1-0-0 in the GNAC with the triumph in their home opener. Western Oregon fell to 1-2-0 overall, 1-1-0 in the conference.
Page opened the scoring in the 56th minute, scoring unassisted from 15 yards out after intercepting a clearing attempt. Sabado added insurance in the 67th minute, tapping in a rebound after a free kick by defender
Amy Bouska (Jr., Des Moines/Mount Rainier).
Western goalkeeper Shaye Anderson (Sr., Kamuela, HI/Parker) did not have to make a save in earning her first shutout of the season, but twice narrowly won balls after Western Oregon strikers got behind the Viking defense, and had the shutout preserved in the 87th minute, when Wolves forward Mariel Chandler hit the post on a penalty kick.
The Vikings, who had a 9-4 edge in shots, had not scored in 345 minutes of play this season prior to Page's goal.
"It just took us time to figure out the things we needed to do as a team to score goals," said Western coach Railene Thorson. "Our defense is going to be the cornerstone of our team because of the experience we have there."
Western travels to Humboldt State University on Friday (11 a.m.) for a conference counter.
