ARCATA, Calif. - Western Washington University's failure to clear on throw ins accounted for two second-half goals as the Vikings fell 2-0 to Humboldt State in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's soccer game Friday night at the Redwood Bowl.

Western, which was blanked for the fourth time in five games this season, fell to 1-3-1 overall and 1-1-0 league. Humboldt State stayed atop the GNAC at 3-0-0 and improved to 5-1-0 overall.

Following a scoreless first half, Alita Hill collected a throw in from Juliana Goldstein and hammered it into the goal to give Humboldt State a 1-0 lead two minutes into the second period. Ten minutes later, the Lumberjacks scored again on another throw in by Goldstein. This one went to Lindsay Holm who passed it to Jenna Hunter for the score.

Western had a 12-9 edge in shots, but Lumberjack goalkeeper Mariah Talbott made six saves. The Vikings' best scoring opportunity came with 10 minutes remaining in the second half when a point-blank shot by Chela Gray (Fr., Kaneohe, HI/Iolani) was smothered by Talbott, who registered her third shutout.

"Their field is very narrow and their game plan was to finish throw ins," said Western coach Railene Thorson.

In goal for Western during the first half was Kara Davis (Sr., Rapid City, SD/Stevens), who made two saves. Shaye Anderson (Sr., Kamuela, HI/Parker) took over in the second half and also had two saves.

Western is at Southern Oregon University on Sunday (12 noon) for a non-conference game.
