MONMOUTH, Ore. - Mariel Chandler took a long pass from Lisa Munyon and knocked it into the top righthand corner of the net as Western Oregon University nipped Western Washington University, 2-1, in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's soccer game Friday at the WOU Soccer Field.
Chandler's goal capped a flurry of offense from both teams in the final 11 minutes after a scoreless 78 minutes of play.
The Vikings, who fell to 4-12-1 overall and 2-7-1 league, got the game's first goal in the 79th minute as Ashley Jensen (So., Tacoma/Wilson) scored off a pass from Natali Pineda (Sr., Yakima/Eisenhower). It was Jensen's team-leading sixth goal of the season.
Western Oregon, which improved to 6-9-1 overall and 3-5-1 league, tied the game less than a minute later as Mary Mulkey found the net wth a header, Amy McMenamin getting the assist. Western Washington's Mary Frances Buri (Fr., Gig Harbor/Peninsula) had a shot on goal during the final minute, but Wolves' goalkeeper Moani Mundo made one of her nine saves.
The loss was Western Washington's seventh in its last eight games. Western Oregon is 4-2-1 in its last seven contests after a 2-7-0 start.
Western Washington goalkeeper Teresa Fish (Fr., Snohomish/Monroe) was credited with nine saves.
Western Oregon had a 20-10 advantage in shots, and Western Washington a 5-3 edge in corner kicks.
Western Washington travels to Humboldt State University for a GNAC counter Sunday (12 noon).
