BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Forward Ashley Jensen (So., Tacoma/Wilson) scored a bizarre second-half goal to give Western Washington University a 1-0 victory over Central Washington University in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's soccer game Sunday at Civic Stadium.
The Vikings, who are unbeaten in their last three games, improved to 3-5-1 overall and 2-1-1 in the GNAC with the triumph. Central fell to 2-7-0 overall, 0-3-0 in the GNAC.
Jensen, who leads Western with four goals, got the game-winner in the 69th minute, charging down a punt from Wildcat goalkeeper Jillyan Boyer. The ball caromed off Jensen's back, went past Boyer, bounced twice and settled in the net.
"Ashley pressured up front today better than any other game this season and it paid off," said Western coach Travis Connell.
The Vikings later had a free kick by forward Chela Gray (So., Kaneohe, HI/Iolani) hit the post, but then had to protect the lead as the Wildcats applied pressure in the final 10 minutes but never got off a clear shot.
Western had a 12-7 edge in shots in the game, but Central had the best chance of the first half, as midfielder Shelly Campbell got the ball off a scramble and had a shot from the goalmouth, forcing Viking goalkeeper Teresa Fish (Fr., Snohomish/Monroe) to make a diving deflection.
Fish had four saves in earning her second consecutive shutout, and has not allowed a goal in the last 223 minutes of action.
"We're still trying to find the right combinations," Connell said. "We're getting better, but we haven't found all the solutions on offense yet. To beat Seattle U. and Seattle Pacific, we need to be better in attack."
The Vikings, who completed a four-game home stand, travel to Seattle University on Wednesday, Sept. 24, for a GNAC counter at 3 p.m.
