BURNABY, B.C. - Western Washington University was blanked for the second straight game by a nationally ranked opponent as it fell 1-0 to NAIA No.6-rated Simon Fraser University in a women's college soccer game Tuesday at Terry Fox Field.
The loss snapped a five-game unbeaten streak for the Vikings, who fell to 7-5-1. Last Wednesday, they played to a 0-0 tie with NCAA Division II No.10 Seattle U.
Simon Fraser, now unbeaten in eight straight games, improved to 9-1-1.
Midfielder Leslie Gibbens fired a free kick over the wall for the contest's only goal in the 40th minute.
"It's disappointing," said Western coach Travis Connell. "We've been playing so well, and today we did not play well. We were pretty slow in our transition, and did not rotate quickly on defense, so they had a lot of possession against us."
"We had a few chances. Rachelle (Saletto, Fr., Bellingham/Sehome) had a shot in the second half when she got in behind the defense, but not much more than that."
Simon Fraser had a 16-2 shot advantage, Viking goalkeeper Teresa Fish (So., Snohomish/Monroe) making 10 saves.
"Amanda Font (Fr., Federal Way/Decatur) and Katy Sebens (So., Oak Harbor) really worked their tails off," Connell said. "They had such energy in the game, and really kept us in it."
Western hosts NCAA II top-ranked Seattle Pacific in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference contest on Sat., Oct. 16 (5 p.m.). The Falcons (11-0-1, 4-0-1, at Northwest Nazarene on Wed.) have not allowed a goal in their last six games.
