BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Middle blocker Meghan Evoy (Sr., Olympia/Capital) and libero Brianna Murray (Sr., Everett/Cascade) had match-highs of 22 kills and 34 digs, respectively, as Western Washington University defeated Saint Martin's College, 30-20, 30-22, 27-30, 30-15, in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference volleyball match Saturday at Sam Carver Gymnasium.
The Vikings, rated No.21 in this week's American Volleyball Coaches Association/NCAA Division II Top 25, improved to 12-6 overall, 8-3 in the GNAC. They have won 48 of their last 50 home matches.
Krystal Knight (Jr., Sumner) had 14 kills, 15 digs and three blocks for Western, Jamie Petersen (Jr., Kent/Kentwood) 14 kills and 12 digs, and Kristy Carstensen (Sr., Puyallup) 16 kills and three blocks.
Saint Martin's fell to 3-15 overall, 1-10 in GNAC action. The Saints were led by Kristen Ponce with 12 kills and 11 digs.
Western, which had 10 service aces, posted a .221 attack percentage to .092 for the Saints. Setter Kristen Urdahl (Jr., Spokane/Ferris) had four aces and 64 assists, both match highs.
In the opening game, the Vikings scored 11 of the last 12 points after Saint Martin's had tied the score at 19-all. Trailing 20-19 in game two, Western ended it with an 11-2 run.
Ponce scored the last two points for the Saints in game three with a kill and ace after the Vikings had pulled within one.
Western got out to a 9-2 lead in game three and Saint Martin's never got closer than five after that.
The Vikings travel to Seattle Pacific University on Sat., Oct. 23 (7 p.m.), for a GNAC counter.
