FAIRBANKS, Alaska - Middle blocker Meghan Evoy (Sr., Olympia/Capital) had a match-high 17 kills and middle blocker Kristy Carstensen (Sr., Puyallup) had 14 kills and a match-high five blocks as Western Washington University defeated University of Alaska Fairbanks, 30-27, 20-28, 30-18, in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference volleyball match Saturday.
The Vikings improved to 14-7 overall and 10-4 in GNAC play with their eighth consecutive triumph over the Nanooks.
Alaska Fairbanks fell to 11-11 overall, 8-7 in the conference. Mallory Bergstrom led the Nanooks with 15 kills before leaving with a hamstring injury early in the third game and Danielle Hitzeman added 14 kills.
Western rallied from early deficits in the first two games, falling behind 6-1 in the opening frame before recovering to tie the score at 16-16, then closing the game by scoring four of the last six points.
In the third game, the Vikings trailed only at 5-4, and broke the contest open with an 8-2 run that gave them a 21-13 lead.
"That's probably the best composure we've played with all season long," said Western coach Diane Flick. "This was one of our best matches of the year."
Courtney Schneider (Fr., Snohomish) had 22 digs and Brianna Murray (Sr., Cascade/Everett) had 11 kills and 18 digs. The Vikings also did not have a receiving error.
The Vikings next make their final two home appearances of the season, entertaining Western Oregon University on Friday (7 p.m.) and Humboldt State University on Saturday (7 p.m.) in a pair of GNAC matches.
