BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Midfielder Nikki Szlak scored a goal in the sixth minute and it held up as Cal State Dominguez Hills blanked Western Washington University, 1-0, in college women's soccer action Monday at Civic Stadium. It was the first victory in three games for the Toros (1-2-0). The loss evened Western's record at 1-1-0, the Vikings opening the season with a 1-0 win over Cal Poly Pomona on Saturday. "We played very well, but we didn't come out with the same intensity as we did against Cal Poly Pomona," said Western head coach Travis Connell. "Hopefully we'll learn from that, so it won't happen again." Szlak's goal was the first of the season for Cal State Dominguez Hills. After receiving a pass from Amy Livergood, Szlak caught the lower right corner of the net from 10 yards out. Western had two good opportunities to tie the game in the final 25 minutes. In the 68th minute, midfielder Lizzy Page (Jr., Sammamish/Eastlake) hit the crossbar from 25 yards out. And in the 88th minute, a cross by Page just eluded Erin Casey (Jr., Redmond) on the far post. Cal State Dominguez Hills held a slight advantage in both shots (8-7) and corner kicks (5-4). Toros' goalkeeper Nhi Tran had two saves. Western next travels to San Francisco State for a non-league game Thursday (4 p.m.). The Vikings play at Sonoma State on Sunday (1 p.m.).
