No.16 Western sweeps at Saint Martin's

Sept. 18, 2004

Box Score

LACEY, Wash. - Outside hitter Jamie Petersen (Jr., Kent/Kentwood) had 16 kills, 14 digs and two blocks as Western Washington University swept Saint Martin's College, 30-22, 30-16, 30-25, in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference volleyball match Friday at SMC Pavilion.

The Vikings, No.16 in this week's AVCA/NCAA Division II Top 25, improved to 7-3 overall and 3-0 in the GNAC with their sixth straight victory.

The triumph extended Western's winning streak in the GNAC to 57 matches, the longest active conference streak in NCAA II and the fourth-longest in that division's history. The Vikings need two more wins to match the third-longest string, with the record being 77 set by West Texas A&M from 1999 to 2003.

Saint Martin's fell to 2-7 overall, 0-2 in the GNAC. Lauren Kreiger led the Saints with 10 kills, and Jacque Buchanan had a match-high 21 digs.

"It was ugly, but it was a win," said Western coach Diane Flick. "We just had a couple lulls in our play, but when we needed to we picked it up."

Middle blockers Kristy Carstensen (Sr., Puyallup) and Meghan Evoy (Sr., Olympia/Capital) had 13 and 10 kills, respectively, for the Vikings. Brianna Murray (Sr., Everett/Cascade) had 17 digs and three service aces, Krystal Knight (Jr., Sumner) 15 digs and Courtney Schneider (Fr., Snohomish) 13 digs.

Western had a .221 attack percentage to .071 for Saint Martin's.

The Vikings scored the last nine points to win game one, never trailed in game two, and scored the last four points in game three after the Saints had moved to within one.

Western travels to Ellensburg on Saturday to play arch-rival Central Washington University, which was undefeated in 10 matches, in a GNAC counter.
