BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Outside hitter Siri Wuotila (So., Seattle/Highline) had a career-high 18 kills as Western Washington University reestablished its winning ways with a sweep of Saint Martin's University in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference volleyball match Thursday on Haggen Court at Carver Gym.
The Vikings, who improved to 12-7 overall and 8-3 in league action, have won six of their last seven matches. They had a season-best five-match winning streak snapped last Saturday in a five-game loss at nationally No.10-ranked Central Washington.
Saint Martin's fell to 1-17 overall and 1-11 in GNAC. Outside hitter Kirstin Bautista led the Saints, who picked up their first win of 2005 last Saturday at home over Alaska Fairbanks, with team highs of 12 kills and 16 digs.
The Vikings had an attack percentage of .386, with Wuotila, who had just two errors in 31 attempts, at .516, and middle blocker Angie Alvord (Fr., Lynden/Meridian) at .600 with 12 kills and no errors in 20 attempts.
"We did a good job with the high hitting percentage tonight," said Western coach Diane Flick. "Siri had her best night as a Viking. I was very proud of her effort."
Western was never seriously threatened. The Vikings led just 16-15 in the opening game before going on a 7-2 run to put it out of reach, then led wire-to-wire in the second game. After Western jumped to an 11-3 lead in the third game, Saint Martin's closed to within three points on four occasions, but got no closer.
Outside hitter Jaime Anderson (So., SeaTac/Mount Rainier) had 11 kills for Western and libero Courtney Schneider (So., Snohomish) had team-highs of 15 digs and three service aces.
Keana Morrisey had 10 kills for the Saints, seven of them in the opening game, and setter Lisa Hall had eight kills in 10 attempts.
Western is 5-1 at home this season and 55-3 since Flick took over as head coach in 2000. The Vikings entertain Seattle University on Saturday (7 p.m.) in a GNAC counter.
