BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Middle blocker Tiana Roma (R-Fr., Edmonds/Edmonds-Woodway) had 12 kills and a .522 attack percentage and right-side hitter Lindsey Signer (So., Stanwood) added 11 kills and hit .308 as Western Washington University swept Northwest Nazarene University, 30-28, 30-24, 30-21, in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference volleyball match Saturday at the Johnson Sports Center.
Roma also had a match-high seven blocks for the Vikings, who improved to 14-9 overall and 9-5 in conference play. Libero Courtney Schneider (So., Snohomish) had 13 digs for Western, and outside hitter Jamie Petersen (Sr., Kent/Kentwood) had 10 digs.
Northwest Nazarene dropped to 8-15 overall and 6-9 in GNAC action. The Crusaders got a match-high 15 kills from Kristy Wigren, who also had 13 digs.
"We had seven aces spread out among four players," said Western coach Diane Flick," and even though we didn't get aces sometimes, we kept them off balance with our serves."
Trailing 21-16 in game one, the Vikings scored six straight points for a 22-21 lead and went ahead to stay at 25-24 on a kill by Siri Wuotila (So., Seattle/Highline). They were behind again, 24-23, in game two, but scored the last seven points for the victory with setter Katie Robinson (So., Everson/Nooksack Valley) serving the last six points.
A 9-3 run in game three gave Western a 20-13 lead and the Crusaders never got closer than four points after that.
Western hosts Seattle University on Thursday (7 p.m.) and Western Oregon on Saturday (7 p.m.) in its final two home appearances of the season. Both contests are GNAC counters.
