COCONUT, Fla. - Freshman middle blocker Marissa Hill (North Bend/Mount Si) had a team-high 31 kills on the day as Western Washington University split a pair of matches Sunday to close out the Barry University Buccaneer Invitational Volleyball Tournament at North Broward Prep School.
The Vikings, 3-1, defeated Dowling College NY, 30-19, 29-31, 30-25, 30-23, before losing to NCAA Division II No.3-ranked Barry, 30-17, 22-30, 30-22, 30-16. On Saturday, Western debuted with a five-game victory over the defending national champion Buccaneers and defeated Nova Southeastern University FL, 3 games to 1.
"It was a little disappointing losing to Barry, but overall it was a great tournament for us," said Western coach Diane Flick. "We got everyone in there to play and came out with some wins when the goals for us were to get some experience and see how our lineups were going to work."
In the win over Dowling, Hill contributed match-highs of 16 kills and five service aces as the Vikings posted an attack percentage of .284. Hill hit .343.
Western middle blocker Tiana Roma (R-Fr., Edmonds/Edmonds-Woodway) had 14 kills and hit .545 and outside hitter Sarah Primrose (Fr., Issaquah) added 10 kills with a .226 percentage.
"It's really nice to see three of your freshmen in double-digit kills and hitting for a high percentage," Flick said.
Outside hitter Jaime Anderson (So., SeaTac/Mount Rainier) and libero Courtney Schneider (So., Snohomish) tied for match-high honors in digs for the Vikings with 17 each. Middle blocker Lindsey Signer (So., Stanwood) led in blocks with five.
Dowling hit just .157. The Lions were paced by Marta Slodnik with 14 kills, 17 digs and four service aces, all team highs.
In the loss to Barry, Western hit just .119 and had 11 service errors. The Vikings were led by Hill with 15 kills and Schneider with 27 digs. Barry, which hit .242, got 12 kills and 15 digs from Jentry Redinger, and a match-high 17 kills from Kelly Dantas.
Barry got off to quick leads in all three of its game victories, with Western scoring nine of the last 11 points in winning game two.
"We made way too many unforced errors and created too much chaos on our side of the net," said Flick.
Western next competes at the Seattle Pacific University Invitational Tournament. The Vikings meet Cal Poly Pomona (11:30 a.m.) and Cal State L.A. (4:30 p.m.) on Friday, and face Chico State (11:30 a.m.) and Nebraska Kearney (4:30 p.m.) on Saturday.
