BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Right-side hitter Sarah Primrose (Fr., Issaquah) led a balanced attack with 11 kills as the Western Washington University volleyball team defeated University of Alaska Fairbanks, 30-16, 30-16, 30-27, on Saturday afternoon in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference contest on Haggen Court at Sam Carver Gymnasium.
Western improved to 6-4 overall and 2-0 in the GNAC with its third victory in the last four matches. Alaska Fairbanks, which was led by the match-high 13 kills of Mallory McCormick, fell to 0-6 overall and 0-2 in the GNAC.
Five Vikings had at least five kills, with Krystal Knight (Sr., Sumner) having nine and middle blocker Lindsey Signer (So., Stanwood) adding seven and having a .467 attack percentage.
"We were very balanced today," said Western coach Diane Flick. "Sarah Primrose had an excellent match, but she was far from the only threat. Through the first two games, we played consistently, which is something we've been striving for."
The Nanooks led only in the third game, with their biggest edge being at 18-14. The Vikings then went on a 14-4 run, with Signer having a kill and two service aces in the charge that put the match away. Western led from the start in the opening game, and after the second game was tied at 6-6, used a 12-1 run to open up an 18-7 margin and closed the game out with eight consecutive service points by setter Katie Robinson (So., Everson/Nooksack Valley).
Libero Courtney Schneider (So., Snohomish) had a match-high 22 digs for Western.
The Vikings host American Volleyball Coaches Association/NCAA Division II No.9-ranked Central Washington University in a GNAC counter Saturday, Sept. 17 (7 p.m.) at Carver Gym.
