BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Simon Fraser University scored an early goal and held off Western Washington University to claim a 1-0 win in a non-league women's soccer game Saturday night at Civic Stadium.

The Vikings, who last played on Sept. 5, fell to 3-2-0 and had a three-game winning streak snapped.

Simon Fraser, ranked No.8 in the NAIA, improved to 3-1-1. Jacqueline Gant scored the only goal of the game in the 18th minute, finishing from five yards out after a cross from the left wing by Carlen Oates.

Western controlled much of possession the second half, with the best chance coming in the 68th minute when midfielder Katie Weber (So., Yakima/Eisenhower) got to a loose ball and shot just wide from 10 yards out.

Each team had nine shot attempts. Simon Fraser goalkeeper Michele Gademans made two saves in earning the shutout.

The Vikings open Great Northwest Athletic Conference play Thursday (2 p.m.) against Humboldt State University at Whatcom CC Soccer Field.
