PHOENIX, AZ - Katja Trygg (Sr., Bainbridge Island) is second in medalist play after shooting even par 72, helping Western Washington University lead the Grand Canyon University Fall Invitational Women's Golf Tournament by one stroke following first-round action Monday at the Cold Water Golf Course.
Tuesday's final round of the 10-team tournament begins at 7 a.m.
Western, the defending champion, shot 304. Host Grand Canyon is second at 305 and Western New Mexico University is third at 306.
"It's basically a one round tournament now," said Western coach Bo Stephan. "We're setting a goal to play better than today and hopefully that's good enough."
"We were really streaky today. We started off slow, then came back and started playing well, but we didn't finish very well."
The medalist leader at 1-under 71 is Katharine Dorris from Western New Mexico. Trygg is one stroke behind her and tied for third at 74 is Western's Katie Bender (Jr., Tacoma/Bellarmine Prep).
Completing the Vikings' scoring were Catherine Kim (So., Bellevue/Skyline), who is tied for 12th at 78; Candice Wagner (Sr., Milton/Fife), who is tied for 19th at 80 and Jennifer Noland (So., Kennewick/Southridge), who is tied for 21st at 81.
Western, which placed fifth at the 2004 NCAA Division II National Championships, is coming off a six-stroke victory last week in its season opener at the 17-team Northeastern (Okla.) State Invitational.
Trygg, who earned first-team All-America honors last season, is shooting for the sixth medalist title of her four-year career.
