Vikings sweep at Saint Martin's

Oct. 12, 2006

Box Score

LACEY, Wash. - Middle blocker Angie Alvord (So., Laurel/Meridian) had a match-high 15 kills and outside hitter Jaime Anderson (Jr., SeaTac/Mount Rainier) added 11 kills and 12 digs as Western Washington University swept Saint Martin's University, 30-24, 30-20, 30-16, in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference volleyball match Thursday at the SMU Pavilion.

It was the fifth straight victory for the Vikings, who improved to 12-5 overall and 8-1 in the GNAC. That matched their season-best win string and gave them 10 wins in their last 11 matches.

Saint Martin's fell to 1-13 overall and 1-9 in league play, losing its sixth straight match.

"We stayed patient and that's one thing that this team has done a good job of this season," said Western coach Diane Flick, "holding their composure throughout the match. And we got better throughout the match, and that's something I was looking for."

Alvord had a .379 attack percentage for the Vikings. Marissa Hill (So., North Bend/Mount Si) hit .368 with 10 kills, and Tiana Roma (So., Edmonds/Edmonds-Woodway) had a match-high six blocks and nine kills in 15 attempts with just one error for a .533 percentage.

Western's Courtney Schneider (Jr., Snohomish) and Shanley Besett (So., University Place/Curtis) each had 20 digs to tie for match-high honors. That upped Schneider's school career record dig total to 1,591, nine short of the 1,600 plateau.

The Vikings hit .276 to Saint Martin's .161. The Saints also had 12 service errors.

With the score tied at 15-all in game one, Western scored nine of the next 13 points and hung on for the win. The Vikings never trailed in game two, their biggest lead being 11 points, 25-16. A 12-2 run in game three gave Western a 23-9 lead and the Saints never got closer than 11 after that.

It was the Vikings' seventh sweep this season, all of them coming in their last 10 matches.

Western entertains Seattle University on Saturday (7 p.m.) in a GNAC match at Carver Gym where the Vikings are 60-4 since 2000 and 4-0 this season.
