SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The unbeaten Western Washington University women's golf team is second, eight shots off the pace, entering Sunday's final round of the 19-team St. Mary's College Lady Rattler Classic being held at the Golf Club of Texas.
Northeastern State OK is the first-round leader, shooting an opening-round 299 Saturday as Ali Toomer and Courtney Epps each shot 1-over-par 73s.
The Vikings, No.3 nationally in the latest Golfstat/NCAA Division II rating, were led by Candice Wagner (Sr., Milton/Fife), who shot 74 and is tied for second.
Western's Katie Bender (Jr., Tacoma/Bellarmine Prep) shot 75 to tie for fifth, and Katja Trygg (Sr., Bainbridge Island), the top-ranked player in Division II, had a 77 and is tied for 11th.
"I thought we hit it good enough to be in the lead, but we lost a lot of shots on the green," said Western coach Bo Stephan. "They putted well and we didn't, and that was the difference."
Completing the Vikings' scoring were Catherine Kim (So., Bellevue/Skyline) and Allison Gillette (So., Seattle/Ballard), who each shot 81 and are tied for 26th.
Drury MO is third in the team standings at 310, followed by Chico State (316), Hawaii-Hilo (317), host St. Mary's (318) and St. Edward's (321).
The tournament is the first for Western during the spring portion of its schedule. During the fall, the Vikings won all four of their invitational tournaments and one dual match.
