WINTER SPRINGS, Florida - Western Washington University's Katja Trygg (Sr., Bainbridge Island) tied for seventh in medalist play as the previously unbeaten Vikings placed eighth in the 13-team Rollins College Invitational Tournament that ended Tuesday at the Tuscawilla Country Club.
Western entered the tourney with wins in all five of its tournaments and a dual match this season. The Vikings had a 54-hole score of 967, finishing with a round of 314, the third-best of the day.
Rollins, which has won the last three NCAA II national championships, took team honors for the second straight year with a score of 913 (309), 31 shots ahead of runner-up Florida Southern (315=944).
"I'm happy that we played better," said Western coach Bo Stephan. "The course is very tough and the blustery conditions today didn't help. We didn't putt any better, but we hit the ball better."
Western's Katja Trygg (Sr., Bainbridge Island), the second-ranked player in Division II, tied for seventh at 231 with a final-round 76.
"Katja was struggling during this tournament, but she battled out there and to finish where she did was outstanding," Stephan said.
The Vikings' Candice Wagner (Sr., Milton/Fife) tied for 23rd at 241 (80), Catherine Kim (So., Bellevue/Skyline) tied for 26th at 241 (80), Allison Gillette (So., Seattle/Ballard) tied for 50th at 253 (81) and Katie Bender (Jr., Tacoma/Bellarmine Prep) tied for 58th at 255 (80).
Taking medalist honors at 5-over 221 (77) was Samantha Richdale from Illinois State.
Western next competes at the Grand Canyon University Invitational on March 27-28.
