MONMOUTH, Ore. - Western Washington University had three different players score, all in the first half, as the Vikings blanked Western Oregon University, 3-0, in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's soccer game Sunday at WOU field.
It was the GNAC opener for Western Washington, which improved to 6-2-0 overall with its third straight win.
Western Oregon fell to 4-3-1 overall with its second consecutive loss and 0-2 in GNAC play.
"I was really proud of the way they approached the game," said Western Washington coach Travis Connell. "They came down here all business and came out totally focused and concentrated throughout the total 90 minutes. It was the most mentally prepared game that we've had, and to go on the road and have that concentration, that's really what got us the win.
"If we can keep producing that type of mental discipline as we approach games, that's really going to help us the rest of the season."
Goalkeeper Brittany Martin-Gegax (Fr., Everett/Cascade) had four saves in registering her third shutout of the season.
"She made a couple of key saves," Connell said. "Anytime that you can go on the road and get a shutout, that's good."
Western Washington's Katy Nydam (Jr., Oak Harbor) opened the scoring in the 25th minute, knocking in a rebound off a blocked pass. Alyssa Kessler (Jr., Portland, OR/Grant) chipped a shot over the goalkeeper from 15 yards in the 34th minute, Alexandria Marquard (Fr., Spokane/University) being credited with the assist; and Jenny Barton (Fr., Boise, ID/Borah) scored in the 44th minute on an assist by Meghan Woodman (R-Fr., Redmond).
Woodman now has a team-best four assists this season.
The Vikings had a 15-7 advantage in shots, including an 8-4 edge in shots on goal.
