BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Midfielder Jenny Barton (So., Boise, ID/Borah) scored in the first half and forward Emily Frankland (Fr., Sammamish/Skyline) added a late insurance goal as Western Washington University defeated Western Oregon University, 2-0, in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's soccer contest Monday at Orca Field on the Whatcom CC campus.
It was the fourth win in the last five games for the Vikings, who improved to 12-6-1 overall and 7-5-1 in the GNAC. All four of those victories have been by shutout and their only loss during that stretch was 2-0 to nationally No.2-ranked Seattle Pacific.
Western Oregon fell to 4-12-3 overall and 4-8-1 in league play.
Barton opened the scoring in the 35th minute, winning the ball off a Western Oregon turnover and bending a shot from 25 yards out into the upper left corner for her first goal of the season.
Frankland closed out the match in the 88th minute, slotting the ball in on a breakaway after a long through ball by Kelly Irving (So., Gig Harbor).
Western Washington had a 16-5 edge in shots, but Viking goalkeeper Teresa Fish (Sr., Snohomish/Monroe) still had to make four saves in extending her school record for shutouts in a season to 11 and her GNAC and school-record career total to 32.
Fish's toughest save came in the 60th minute when she leaped to deflect a free kick by Maggie Kuzmer over the crossbar.
It was the final regular-season home game for four Western Washington seniors - Fish, defender Amanda Font (Sr., Federal Way/Decatur), defender Alyssa Kessler (Jr., Portland, OR/Grant) and forward Rosie Zadra (Poulsbo/Olympic CC) .
The Vikings close out their regular season Saturday (12 noon), traveling to Central Washington for a GNAC counter.
