BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Three Vikings had 13 kills each as Western Washington University defeated Cal Poly Pomona, 30-18, 30-17, 30-19, in first-day action Friday at the Western Washington University Invitational Volleyball Tournament on Haggen Court at Sam Carver Gymnasium on the WWU campus.
The triumph lifts the Vikings, No.23 in the CSTV American Volleyball Coaches Association Division II Preseason Top 25 Poll, to 3-2 overall. Cal Poly Pomona, which defeated Western Oregon in five games earlier Friday, fell to 4-1.
Outside hitters Jaime Anderson (Sr., SeaTac/Mount Rainier) and Emily Castro (Sr., Bellingham/Meridian), and middle blocker Angie Alvord (Jr., Laurel/Meridian) each had 13 kills for Western. Alvord also had a match-high eight blocks.
Libero Courtney Schneider (Sr., Snohomish) added 32 digs for the Vikings.
Western pulled away late in the first game, breaking open a 20-17 contest by scoring 10 of the final 11 points. In the second game, a string of five Schneider service points helped the Vikings to a 14-6 lead, and the margin never got under seven after that. In the third game, Western took quick control, cruising in after opening up a 10-3 gap.
Antoinette Kathol and Jenna Young each had five kills for Cal Poly Pomona, and Kiting Kolar had 17 digs.
Western had a .310 attack percentage, notching 55 kills and 15 errors in 129 hitting attempts.
The Vikings face Cal State Dominguez Hills in Friday's concluding match (7 p.m.). Schneider enters the match with 1,968 career digs, 40 short of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference record.
