MONMOUTH, Ore. - Western Washington University scored multiple first-half goals for the first time this season as it defeated Western Oregon University, 3-0, in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's soccer contest Friday afternoon at the WOU Soccer Field.
The Vikings improved to 7-2-1 overall and 2-2-1 in GNAC play. Entering the contest, they had scored just three goals all year in the opening half.
Western Oregon, which has scored just four goals this season, remained winless at 0-9-2 overall and 0-5-0 in league action.
It was the second straight shutout and the 26th of her four-year career for WWU goalkeeper Teresa Fish (Sr., Monroe/Snohomish), who now owns the GNAC record outright. She made four saves in getting her sixth shutout of the season.
"They were a little motivated, they wanted to get Fish the record," said WWU coach Travis Connell. "They played good defense and got off to an early start in scoring, which was nice because it hasn't happened very often this season. The two goals in the first half really gave us a lot of confidence."
Lucy Miller (So., Palisades, CA) got the Vikings on the board in the 20th minute, scoring from 16 yards after getting a long ball over the top of the defense from Kasey Hostetler (So., Richland/Hanford). They added another goal with 1:10 left in the half as Kelly Gagne (Jr., Kent/Kentwood) headed in a cross from Shelby Marcell (Jr., Redmond/Eastlake). A penalty kick by Claire Morgan (R-Fr., Bellingham) in the 85th minute closed out the scoring.
WWU had a 19-11 advantage in shots.
The Vikings next travel to Saint Martin's University for a GNAC contest on Sun., Sept. 30 (1 p.m.).
