BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Forward Molly Shannon (So., Bellingham) scored the winning goal in the 14th minute of overtime as nationally ranked Western Washington University edged Simon Fraser University, 2-1, in a non-conference women's soccer contest Saturday at Orca Field on the campus of Whatcom CC.
The Vikings, ranked No.13 in this week's National Soccer Coaches Association of America/NCAA Division II Coaches Poll and second in the Far West Region ratings, improved to 13-2-1.
Western extended its unbeaten streak to 11 games (10-0-1), the longest in 24 years since winning a school-record 38 straight contests from 1982 to 1984.
The Vikings have outscored their opponents 26-7 during the run.
Simon Fraser, ranked No.12 nationally in the NAIA, fell to 9-5-0.
Shannon got the ball five yards in front of the goal from Claire Morgan (So., Bellingham) and tucked it into the net. It was seventh goal of the season for Shannon and the team-leading seventh assist for Morgan.
Kelly Irving (Jr., Gig Harbor) gave Western a 1-0 lead in the 30th minute, taking a pass from Emily Frankland (So., Sammamish/Skyline) and flicking it up and over the goalkeeper from five yards out. It was the fourth goal for Irving and the fifth assist for Frankland.
Simon Fraser tied it at 1-1 in the 40th minute as Marti Dumas went up the middle and drilled a shot from 20 yards.
Western had a 16-11 shot advantage, but had just one in overtime, the game-winner by Shannon. The Vikings also had an 8-3 edge in corner kicks.
The Vikings next travel to Montana State Billings for a Great Northwest Athletic Conference contest on Friday, Oct. 31 (1 p.m.).
