MONMOUTH, Ore. - Forward Molly Shannon (So., Bellingham) scored a goal and assisted on another as Western Washington University blanked Western Oregon University, 2-0, on Thursday afternoon in women's soccer action at the WOU Soccer Field. It was the Great Northwest Athletic Conference opener for both schools.

The Vikings improved to 5-2-0 overall with their second straight victory and fourth triumph in a row in the series.

Western Oregon fell to 3-5-0 with its fourth consecutive loss. The Wolves have not scored during that stretch of losses.

On Saturday (7 p.m.), Western Washington entertains NCAA Division II nationally No.9-ranked Seattle Pacific University in a GNAC counter at Orca Field on the Whatcom CC campus.

"It's always good to get a win on the road," said Western Washington head coach Travis Connell. "Hopefully we can keep it rolling against Seattle Pacific."

Claire Morgan (So., Bellingham) scored for the Vikings in the 20th minute, booting the ball in from the top of the box after receiving a cross from Shannon.

Western Washington's other goal came in the 70th minute off a corner kick. Shannon knocked it in from eight yards with Kelly Irving (Jr., Gig Harbor) and Jenny Barton (Jr., Boise, ID/Borah) getting assists.

It was the third shutout of the season for Viking goalkeeper Kylie Broadbent (Sr., Spokane/Lewis & Clark), who made four saves.

Western had a huge 25-8 shot advantage.
