LACEY, Wash. - Western Washington University had a 21-game league unbeaten streak end at 21 as it fell 2-1 to Saint Martin's University in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's soccer contest Monday at the Regional Athletic Complex.
The Vikings, who were coming off a 3-2 victory over nationally No.1-ranked and previously unbeaten Seattle Pacific on Saturday, dropped to 6-3-2 overall and 4-1-1 in GNAC action. They had entered the contest with an overall unbeaten string of seven games, six of them victories.
Saint Martin's improved to 7-5-0 overall and 3-3-0 in GNAC play.
"After our emotional win Saturday, we didn't quite have the same energy today," said Western coach Travis Connell. "We played much better in the second half, but they did a good job of organizing their defense and keeping us from getting that tying goal."
All three goals came during a span of 1:50 near the end of the first half. Saint Martin's got on the scoreboard first, Kayci Donatelli scoring off a free kick from 10 yards early in the 43rd minute, Shannon White getting the assist.
Twenty-eight seconds later, Western tied the score at 1-1 as the Vikings put the ball behind the defense on the left side to Bryn Gibson (Sr., Bellevue/Interlake). She played a cross on the ground to Claire Morgan (Jr., Bellingham), who finished from three yards.
The Saints took a 2-1 lead late in the 44th minute as Jenny Baker scored her first goal of the season, finding the net from five yards after receiving a pass from Jill Webb.
Western had won 18 league contests and tied three others since their last GNAC setback, 2-0 to then No.2-rated Seattle Pacific on Oct. 17, 2007.
The Vikings' win Saturday over Seattle Pacific had snapped a 21-game winning streak and a 27-game unbeaten streak for the Falcons.
Western is at UC San Diego on Thursday (7 p.m.) for a non-conference contest.
