LACEY, Wash. - Nationally ranked Western Washington University hit .385 and served 12 aces as it swept Saint Martin's University, 25-12, 25-15, 25-12, in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference volleyball match Saturday at Marcus Pavilion that took just 1:13 to complete.
The Vikings, ranked No.16 in this week's American Volleyball Coaches Association/NCAA Division II Top 25 Poll, improved to 13-2 overall and remained tied for first place in the GNAC with Seattle Pacific at 10-1. It was their fifth straight win and ran their consecutive set victories to 15.
"I thought our serving tonight was very good, which really put them on their heals," said Western coach Diane Flick (11th year, 225-62). "Our defense was excellent and our offense was very efficient."
Saint Martins dropped to 1-15 overall and 1-10 in conference play with its seventh straight loss.
It was the 24th straight series win for Western, which holds a 45-5 advantage over the Saints.
Five players had six or more kills for the Vikings, who trailed only once in the match and had just seven attack errors in 104 attempts.
Megan Amundson (Sr., Stanwood) (.333) and Kathryn Mertens (Sr., Olympia) (.600) each had a match-high nine kills for Western. Marlayna Geary (So., Tacoma/Bellarmine Prep) (.316) added eight, Emily Jepsen (Jr., Kennewick/Kamiakin) (.273) seven and Bailey Jones (So., Mukilteo/Kamiak) (.455) six.
Libero Alison Gotz (Sr., Bothell/Archbishop Murphy) had a match-high 22 digs and Jepsen served three aces.
Western entertains Alaska Anchorage on Thursday (7 p.m.) and Alaska Fairbanks on Saturday (7 p.m.) in a pair of GNAC counters.
