BILLINGS, Mont. - Any post-season hopes evaporated as Western Washington University was blanked 1-0 by Montana State University Billings in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's soccer game Thursday at Yellowjacket Field.
The Vikings, ranked No.10 in the latest NCAA Division II West Region rating, fell to 9-4-3 overall and 6-4-2 in GNAC play.
MSUB, seventh in the regional poll, improved to 11-4-1 overall and solidified second-place in the league standings at 8-4-0.
"They were definitely the better team today," said Western coach Travis Connell of MSUB. "They worked real hard and capitalized on their chances. They should go far in the tournament as they outplayed us today and definitely deserve to be there."
"We just didn't have the intensity today. I figured we wouldn't have a hard time getting up for this game with our season riding on it, but they beat us in every aspect of the game."
Heidi Greenback scored the only goal of the contest, her seventh of the season, from six yards out in the 48th minute. Jaucelyn Richter and Kari Foreman were credited with assists.
MSUB goalkeeper Sabri Grandke-Bawab made two saves in recording her sixth shutout of the campaign, and Western goalie Jamie Arthurs (So., Richland) had three saves. Western entertains Northwest Nazarene University on Saturday (11 a.m.) for a GNAC counter.
