BURNABY, B.C. - Nationally ranked Western Washington University tied Simon Fraser University, 0-0 in overtime, in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's soccer game Friday night at Terry Fox Field on the Simon Fraser campus.
The Vikings, ranked No.9 in this week's National Soccer Coaches Association of America/NCAA Division II Top 25, are 8-1-2 overall and remained first in the GNAC at 5-1-1. They are unbeaten in their last three games (2-0-1) and have not lost in five road contests (4-0-1) this season.
"No one had the quality chance in the final third (of the field) to get the goal that was needed to win this game," said Western coach Travis Connell (8th year, 90-47-14).
"There were not a lot of chances. It was a defensive battle if there ever was one. Each team had a couple of decent chances, but not one that had the quality of that last pass or that last touch to get the ball in the back of the net."
Simon Fraser, 4-3-2 overall and 3-2-2 in conference action, had a 14-9 advantage in shots and eight of 12 corner kicks.
Western goalkeeper Jamie Arthurs (So., Richland) made nine saves in recording her eighth shutout of the campaign.
Simon Fraser goalie Amelia Ng had four saves.
Midway through the second half, Western's Joana Houplin struck a ball that was heading to the far side of the net but an outstretched Ng made the save.
With two minutes left in overtime, Simon Fraser's Lia Marining had a solid opportunity when she received a cross but her header went just wide of the far post.
Western next travels to Saint Martin's on Thursday (1 p.m.) for a GNAC counter.
