BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Forward Molly Shannon (Sr., Bellingham) scored two goals and assisted on two others as Western Washington University dominated Western Oregon University, 7-0, in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's soccer game Thursday afternoon at Orca Field on the campus of Whatcom CC.
The contest was the league opener for both schools.
The Vikings improved to 4-0-1 overall and are unbeaten in 12 games dating back to the 2009 season. Western Oregon fell to 1-4-0.
It was the most lopsided win for Western Washington since a 9-0 triumph in the final game of 2005.
Forward Claire Morgan (Sr., Bellingham) had a goal and an assist giving her 20 goals and 21 assists in her four-year career, with the assists ranking fourth in school history.
Freshman defender Brina Sych (Vancouver/Union) opened the scoring in the seventh minute. A free kick fom the midfield line by Alica Patten (So., Seattle/Holy Names) was knocked across the penalty area by Shannon, and Sych scored with a half-volley from 12 yards out on the right side.
Shannon scored her first goal in the 23rd minute, finishing from 15 yards after being set up by Morgan and Joana Houplin (Olympia) to give Western Washington a 2-0 halftime lead.
"I was really proud that we didn't let down," said Western coach Travis Connell (8th year, 86-46-13). "We started strong and maintained it over the 90 minutes. That's something we wanted to accomplish today, and we did that."
In fact, the Vikings were even more dominant in the second half. Morgan headed a ball home in the 49th minute, then 15 minutes later, Western Washington scored twice in a little over a minute, Shannon notching her second goal and then an own goal being scored on a deflected corner kick.
Goals by Katie Stauffer (R-Fr., Boise, ID/Capital) and Anna Geldenhuys (Fr., Bellevue/Sammamish) in the final 10 minutes completed the scoring.
The Vikings had an 18-7 advantage in shots, and goalkeeper Jamie Arthurs (So., Richland) did not have to make a save in earning the shutout.
The Vikings, who have not allowed a goal in the last four contests, complete their four-game home stand with a GNAC contest against Saint Martin's on Saturday (4 p.m.).
