BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Middle blocker Emily Jepsen (Jr., Kennewick/Kamiakin) had match highs of 12 kills and five blocks as nationally ranked Western Washington University cruised past Saint Martin's University, 25-12, 25-13, 25-9, in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference volleyball match Friday at Sam Carver Gymnasium on the WWU campus.
The Vikings, ranked No.18 in this week's American Volleyball Coaches Association/NCAA Division II Top 25 Poll, improved to 6-1 overall and 3-0 in the GNAC with their third straight win. They host Western Oregon on Saturday (7 p.m.) in a battle for first place in the conference.
Saint Martin's fell to 0-8 overall and 0-3 in the GNAC. Middle blocker Katy Ferguson had seven kills for the Saints, who have won just three sets in their eight matches.
It was the 23rd straight time Western has defeated SMU, and the 44th time in 49 all-time meetings. The match took just one hour to complete.
The Vikings took control quickly in each set, jumping to a 15-4 lead in the opener and an 8-2 advantage in the second. In the final set, Western grabbed a 14-2 lead and finished the frame with a .476 attack efficiency, having 12 kills and two errors in 21 attempts.
Right-side hitter Kathryn Mertens (Sr., Olympia) had nine kills and three blocks for Western.
