BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Kari Foreman scored in the 59th minute, leading Montana State University Billings to a 1-0 upset of nationally ranked Western Washington University in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's soccer game Saturday afternoon at Orca Field on the Whatcom CC campus.
The Vikings, ranked No.20 in this week's National Soccer Coaches Association of America/NCAA Division II Top 25, fell to 6-1-1 overall and 3-1-0 in the GNAC, and had a 14-match unbeaten streak that began more than 11 months ago snapped.
MSUB improved to 6-1-1 overall and 3-1-0 in conference play with its third consecutive victory.
Foreman's goal, her third of the season, came on a tap-in of a rebound after an initial shot by Andrea Baytaluke. It was just the third goal allowed by Western this season.
The Yellowjackets had a 14-13 advantage in shots. Western had a 6-5 edge in the first half, although neither team was able to create a clear scoring chance before halftime.
The loss was the first for Western since falling at UC San Diego, 5-0, last Oct. 8. The Vikings had 11 wins and three draws in the run, outscoring their opponents, 30-5, in the 14 games.
The setback also was the first setback for Western in 10 series meetings with MSUB (8-1-1).
Western travels to No.8-ranked Seattle Pacific (6-0-1) on Thursday (7 p.m.) for a GNAC counter at Interbay Stadium.
